Matiu Island

A nature park in the middle of the sea.

Matiu Island in Wellington Bay was first inhabited by Maori tribes before being used as a prison and a quarantine centre. The first lighthouse in New Zealand was built on the island in 1866. The island is accessible to the public and offers a real green haven for visitors who can enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the island's flora and fauna. The island is populated by penguins and many birds and reptiles.
